Gary may have been our first classmate to leave this world.  He died in a car crash, coming home from college, winter break.  I remember he wanted to go to medical school after college. Gary was so bright, also compassionate, and  humorous--just a sweet person.  We were both in the senior class play.

Cindy:  Nancy (Stabins) Dodson and I discussed Gary's death at a Reunion Committee meeting tonight.  Our memory is that Gary died in an auto accident on the Turnpike shortly after graduation.  He was heading to (or coming back from) the beach.  Regardless, we agree that he was our first classmate to die.

I remember being in a car on my way home from Buckhannon to Charleston my freshman year at WVWC. It came on the radio that Gary had died in an accident in the TPK. I was stunned and so upset. I’ll never forget that. Gary was so smart and so funny!  Kept me going in geometry.

David Grubb, the news clipping I have says March 7, 1969, so I guess it was spring break.  I was right about smart, though--Gary had straight As his first semester at college.  Quite a loss, he was a delightful person.

Gary and I were very close. We used to eat lunch together almost every day, often with Buddy  Boone, usually a carton  of chocolate milk ,a sandwich, and a pastry at the bakery display counter at the old Dutchess bakery across from CHS. We attended Hebrew School,Sunday School , and were on basketball teams together at B'nai Jacob synagogue. We were frequently at each other's homes. His tragic death caused me to question a number of my basic religious beliefs. very good guy from a wonderful family and I still think about him a lot.

Marty, you and Gary literally got me through Mr. Jackson’s geometry class. You both understood it and I was pathetic! I was always grateful for the help and the laughs.
